EU Ready to Crack Down on Fake Reviews

For the past number of years, the European Commission has coordinated annual checks, called ‘sweeps’, of websites to identify breaches of EU consumer law in particular sectors.

Last year, the focus was on misleading practices in relation to online reviews. Interestingly, more than half of the checked websites potentially violate the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive.

Have a look at our business briefing to learn more about the findings.

Set against a backdrop of the insights from last year’s sweep and the need for better consumer protection online with the acceleration to digital, the European Commission is about to introduce the EU Omnibus Directive.

At the end of this month, the new Directive is set to give online consumers more traditional rights, better choice and increased transparency when buying digital goods, services and content from online marketplaces and e-commerce sites.

This means that online marketplaces will need to review their pricing processes, reviews verification procedures and transparency practices to comply with the new regulation.

Check out our business briefing for more information on the implications for marketplaces and online traders affected by these changes.
